Take a moment to think about the last meal you cooked. How much if it went down your stomach and how much of it was thrown away? While cooking, we generally prefer to cook more rather than less, using the logic that the excess food can always be consumed at a later time… or thrown.
We’re wasting 1.3 billion tons of food annually – 30% of the food annually produced. This is a luxury we can ill afford. In a world of 7 billion people (estimated to be 9 billion by 2050), this is a criminal waste. 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused due to the production of food.
So next time you decide to make that big meal, take a moment to think about how much food you realistically need. Keep a dessert or a healthy snack as backup if unsure. Cooking more rather than less isn’t really always the best option.
